Esthetician vs. Medical Esthetician

What is the difference between an esthetician and a medical esthetician?

Esthetician: An esthetician primarily focuses on providing services such as nail care, beauty, and skin care such as facials, exfoliations, and waxing. When it comes to skin, an esthetician treats the outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. Their expertise revolves around improving its appearance and health through traditional techniques with an innovative take to reflect current knowledge.

Medical Esthetician: Medical estheticians take skin care a significant step further by incorporating advanced treatments, including energy-based treatments that require specialized training and expertise to treat skin for dramatic results. They treat the deeper layers of the skin, such as the dermis, using innovative equipment, including different types of lasers, intense pulsed light, radiofrequency technology, microneedling, and advanced clinical procedures.

Popular Medical Esthetic Treatments

At Wrapture Beauty Academy, we train you to learn advanced techniques that include operating a range of advanced esthetic technologies such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacials, radiofrequency, fractional lasers, microneedling, and laser hair removal to address a variety of skin concerns. These technologies offer targeted treatments to help clients visibly improve their skin’s appearance and address specific issues.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is an increasingly popular treatment that targets hair follicles, resulting in reduced hair growth in treated areas of the face and body over time. People are increasingly seeking it out at younger ages and in more areas of the face and body than ever before.

Non-Surgical Facelift

Using laser and radiofrequency (and sometimes IPL energy), skin texture is smoothed out to reduce fine lines, undereye circles and bags, and diminish the appearance of large pores and age spots, while facial and neck contours are sculpted and tightened. All without surgery!

Hyperpigmentation & Tone

IPL Photofacials and certain laser treatments, such as fractional lasers, target patches of hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots, age spots, redness, broken capillaries (those small veins found around the nose and cheeks) and uneven skin tone, by breaking down excess melanin and hemoglobin in the skin. Laser is also one of the most popular treatments for melasma.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Laser resurfaces the skin and stimulates collagen production, which helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in smoother and firmer skin.

Body Rejuvenation

Contouring, Stretch Marks,  & Cellulite: Radiofrequency (RF) energy tightens and firms the skin, helping sculpt body contours, reducing cellulite’s appearance and promoting a more youthful look. Fractional laser addresses stretch marks and any other undesired scars or marks on the body.

Acne Scarring

Laser and microneedling target acne scars by promoting collagen remodelling and skin resurfacing to treat both pigmented acne scars (dark spots) and atrophic scars caused by cystic acne (or other conditions such as chickenpox scars).

Uneven Texture

Fractional lasers and microneedling treatments improve skin texture by promoting the growth of fresh, new skin cells and stimulating collagen production. This tightens large pores and smooths out scars and premature signs of aging.

Skin Rejuvenation

Many of these advanced medical esthetic treatments contribute to overall skin rejuvenation by stimulating collagen, improving elasticity, and promoting a healthier complexion. Even if a client is not necessarily there to target just one concern, you will find that once your clients see the results of laser, they will come in for maintenance sessions of energy-based facials and the rejuvenation of the neck, decollete, and hands. The demand for body RF and laser is also on the rise for sculpting, toning, and addressing cellulite, scars, and stretch marks.

Skin Resurfacing

Fractional lasers, microneedling, and picosecond laser treatments offer skin resurfacing benefits by promoting the removal of damaged skin cells and encouraging the growth of new, smoother skin. They are perfect for advanced maintenance facials.

Tattoo Removal

Picosecond lasers are used for tattoo removal due to their ability to break down ink particles more effectively and quickly than traditional laser systems. Surrounding tissue is left unharmed, making picosecond lasers, such as Cynosure‘s PicoSure, a more comfortable tattoo removal option. You will find that clients coming in for tattoo treatments do so for a variety of reasons such as tattoo removal, tattoo diminishment to prep for a new tattoo, and to treat ‘tattoo blowout’ when the ink ‘bleeds’ or blurs out past its outline.

What else? Although these are examples of the most common concerns people look to medical estheticians for, advanced and energy-based treatments have the ability to be adapted to treat even more than is listed here. As new scientific discoveries are made, we are finding more ways to use laser for skin beauty and rejuvenation. Medical esthetics truly is an exciting and evolving field full of new possibilities to bring confidence and skin wellness to your clients.

        • Freelancers or business owners offering advanced esthetic services

Why is laser such a fast-growing field?

        Laser Hair Removal

As laser hair removal becomes more accessible and comfortable, more people are starting treatments at younger ages and targeting more areas of the face and body than ever before.

Once clients experience the results from their initial treatment area, they often return to treat additional areas—recognizing how life-changing the results can be. This creates a strong foundation for ongoing, repeat business.

        Laser Skin Resurfacing

At the same time, interest in achieving “glass skin” is surging. While Botox relaxes muscles, fillers restore volume, and surgery lifts sagging skin, only laser resurfacing improves texture, clarity, and tone at the cellular level. More clients are now turning to laser treatments to clear their skin and restore that dewy, youthful glow only laser can deliver.

Laser & IPL for Scars & Hyperpigmentation

When it comes to concerns like acne scars, melasma, wound and C-section scars, wrinkles, age spots, sun spots, and redness, laser continues to stand out as the most results-driven non-invasive solution.

As more people learn about its effectiveness and technology becomes more accessible, laser treatments are becoming increasingly popular for those seeking clear, even-toned, and rejuvenated skin.

        Laser Tattoo Removal

With more people getting tattoos than ever, and picosecond laser technology making removal faster and more effective, demand for tattoo removal continues to grow. You can expand your training by adding a laser tattoo removal course to this program and learn picosecond laser technology—the industry’s gold standard for tattoo removal.

What is the science behind laser hair removal?

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target the pigment in hair follicles without damaging the surrounding skin. You’ll learn how to safely adjust settings for different skin tones and hair types using light-based science that’s as precise as it is powerful.

Why do you need multiple treatments?

Hair grows in cycles—and IPL is only effective during the active growth phase. But not all hairs are growing at the same time—some are chilling, some are shedding, and some are just starting.

That’s why clients need 6–8 treatments to catch every hair at the right moment. You’ll learn all about the three growth stages and why timing each session just right makes all the difference.

How does Fractional Laser Resurfacing work?

Fractional laser resurfacing uses a laser to deliver microscopic columns of heat—called microchannels—deep into the skin. These micro-injuries are tiny and controlled, but your body treats them as damage and immediately shifts into repair mode.

This healing response is what stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, two essential building blocks of youthful skin:

        • Collagen is like a dense net made of strong ropes woven throughout your skin. It gives your face its firmness, structure, and smooth surface. As we age, our skin slows down collagen production. With fewer “ropes,” skin becomes thinner and starts forming fine lines and wrinkles.
        • Elastin is what gives your skin its “snap back.” It’s the stretchy material that lets your skin return to its normal shape after you smile, laugh, or frown. When elastin breaks down, skin becomes looser and starts “remembering” those facial movements—eventually turning them into static wrinkles.

Fractional laser encourages your skin to rebuild both collagen and elastin. Over a series of treatments, this leads to:

        • Firmer, thicker skin
        • Smoother texture and reduced roughness and pore appearance
        • Softening of wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks
        • Fading of dark spots and pigmentation
        • A more even, dewy, refreshed skin tone

Most clients require 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart, with maintenance every 6 months. You’ll learn how to evaluate skin conditions, plan treatment courses, and monitor results effectively using before-and-after photos—something clients love and that often leads to return visits or interest in treating new areas.

What is an IPL Photofacial and what does it treat?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses broad-spectrum light to treat surface-level skin issues such as:

        • Sunspots and age spots
        • Redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea
        • Uneven skin tone

IPL energy is absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin, heating and eliminating pigment or vascular issues without damaging surrounding tissue.

Clients typically need 3–5 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart and many enjoy longer-lasting results or treat newly formed problem areas with a few maintenance treatments.

        How does microneedling work?

Microneedling is a non-thermal, mechanical skin rejuvenation treatment that uses ultra-fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries across the skin’s surface. These tiny punctures signal the body to begin a natural repair process—stimulating collagen and elastin production without heat or ablation.

Unlike fractional laser, which delivers energy deeper into the dermis using light and heat, microneedling gently works within the upper to mid-dermis. It is especially beneficial for clients with:

        • Sensitive skin or skin types that may not be candidates for laser. Every person is unique—some clients find laser treatments more comfortable, while others prefer the feel of microneedling.
        • Concerns about downtime or heat-triggered pigment sensitivities
        • A preference for a more ‘mechanical’ treatment approach that is not energy-based

        Microneedling is ideal for improving:

        • Skin firmness and resilience
        • Fine lines and early signs of aging
        • Acne scars and the appearance of enlarged pores
        • Mild texture irregularities
        • Overall tone and glow
        • Maintaining results from laser

While both microneedling and laser promote collagen regeneration, they serve different skin needs and comfort levels. Offering both treatments allows you to personalize care for a broader range of clients. Some clients may choose to begin with microneedling and later graduate to laser for more dramatic resurfacing, while others might alternate between the two depending on season, sensitivity, maintenance preferences, or specific concerns.

        A Popular Combination

A popular combination treatment is microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) in the same session. Microneedling creates precise micro-channels in the skin, while RF delivers heat energy deep into the dermis to stimulate even more collagen and elastin production. This synergy enhances tightening and textural improvement more effectively than either treatment alone.

RF feels different from laser, as it produces a warming sensation, compared to the sharper “snap” feeling often associated with laser. This means combining both microneedling and RF in the same appointment stays comfortable. By learning about microneedling and enrollling in add-on RF technology courses , you’ll be well-equipped to create layered treatment plans that deliver transformative, client-specific results.

How does laser compare to Botox and fillers for rejuvenation?

You do not have to choose between laser, Botox, or fillers—because they each do very different things and easily complement one another.

Botox (and similar neuromodulators): Reduces facial muscle movement to soften expression lines and help prevent them from deepening too quickly.

Fillers: Restores lost volume (or adds new volume), including contour shape.

Laser & Microneedling: Improves the surface of your skin—boosting texture, tone, and glow by stimulating collagen.

Unlike Botox or fillers, which affect muscles or volume, laser and microneedling enhance skin quality and clarity and helps products absorb better.

In fact, many people who use injectables also choose laser treatments as part of their routine to maintain youthful, glowing skin.

A common approach for people who enjoy all these treatments is to book laser (or microneedling) sessions either before their next Botox appointment or wait about two weeks after, allowing each treatment to do its best work.

How does Laser Tattoo Removal work?

If you add-on the Laser Tattoo Removal course, you will learn to work with the PicoSure by Cynosure Lutronic, one of the most advanced picosecond tattoo removal lasers available.

It uses picosecond pulses (a trillionth of a second) to shatter ink into tiny particles your body can naturally eliminate through lymphatic flushing. As new skin cells rise to the surface, the tattoo fades further with each treatment.

Unlike older nanosecond lasers, PicoSure works faster and is better at clearing dark, colourful, or stubborn tattoos with fewer treatments and less discomfort.

        Clients seek tattoo removal to:

        • Erase unwanted tattoos
        • Fade old ink for a cover-up
        • Remove tattoos that no longer reflect their style

With tattoos becoming more common across all ages and body areas, this is a growing field—and you’ll get real-world experience performing removal on real people who come in for laser tattoo removal.

Courses to Consider After This One

        Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is becoming a staple in many skin-focused esthetics diploma programs, but it’s still a relatively new addition—and if you completed your training a few years ago, you may not have learned it. Adding dermaplaning as a course during your medical esthetics program is a smart way to expand your skill set with a high-demand, client-favorite treatment. Quick to master and easy to integrate into advanced facial protocols, dermaplaning pairs well with other advanced services, is an excellent (regular) maintenance treatment, and offers immediate, visible results that keep clients coming back.

Radiofrequency Add-Ons: Skin Tightening or Body Contouring

Radiofrequency (RF) is a key modality in modern medical esthetics because it delivers non-invasive, thermal-based tightening of the skin and subdermal layers—without damaging the surface. Learning RF for skin tightening and body contouring equips you to offer results-driven services that appeal to clients who want noticeable changes with minimal downtime.

        These treatments:

        • Use thermal energy (not light, like laser) to stimulate collagen and tighten tissue
        • Are safe for all skin tones and often more comfortable than laser
        • Are ideal for clients who are not ready for injectables or surgery, or want to complement those treatments

By adding RF training, you’ll be better positioned to treat a wide range of age-related concerns, not just on the face but on the body too—broadening your service menu and boosting your income potential.

        Chemical Peels & Microdermabrasion

While some esthetics diploma programs—including ours—now include chemical peels and microdermabrasion, this is a relatively recent update. If you completed your training more than a few years ago, chances are you didn’t receive hands-on instruction in these treatments.

Adding these courses to your medical esthetics program gives you a solid foundation in two of the most widely requested skin-rejuvenation services today. These treatments are:

        • Highly effective for improving texture, tone, and congestion
        • Low-cost to perform, with strong client retention
        • Ideal for pairing or in treatment intervals with more advanced treatments like microneedling, RF, or IPL

Chemical peels and microdermabrasion serve as excellent entry points for new clients and are perfect for maintenance in between higher-tech services.

        Micropigmentation Courses

A great add-on for those interested in the cosmetic side of beauty. These courses require no skin or esthetics background and are ideal for building a well-rounded skill set in semi-permanent makeup services like microblading, lip blush, or microshading—perfect for those who enjoy precision work and visible results.
