Frequently Asked Questions

What is microshading, and how does it work?

Microshading is a semi-permanent eyebrow enhancement technique that uses a fine, machine-powered nano-needle system to gently deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin.

Unlike microblading, which creates hair-like strokes, microshading produces a soft, powdery finish—similar to the effect of brow makeup. It’s especially popular among those with oily or sensitive skin, or anyone who prefers a fuller, more defined brow look.

How the Technique Works

You will learn how to use a nano-needle device to create tiny, pixelated dots that gradually build up colour and shape, offering a gradient or ombré effect that looks natural and polished. Because the pigment is applied more evenly and delicately, the results tend to be longer-lasting and gentler on the skin.

Long-Lasting Definition With Flexible Options

Results typically last 1–2 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. Touch-ups help maintain the desired look over time.

Microshading can be done on its own for a soft, filled-in look or combined with microblading to create hybrid brows that offer both defined hair strokes and fuller, shaded depth.

What popular brow styles can I create with microshading?

  • Powder Brows: A soft, shaded look that resembles brow makeup—ideal for clients who like a fuller, more defined brow.
  • Ombré Brows: A style that fades from light at the front of the brow to darker at the tail, giving a natural yet sculpted gradient effect.
  • Combo (Hybrid) Brows: A fusion of microblading and microshading—hair strokes at the front with shading throughout the body and tail. Offers the best of both worlds.
  • Soft Pixel Brows: A modern take on powder brows using pixelated shading for an ultra-natural finish. Less dense, more breathable look.
  • Stardust Brows: A style that uses layering and dotting techniques to give a diffused, airy effect. Great for clients wanting subtle definition.

Why are ‘wake-up-ready’ beauty services more popular than ever?

Semi-permanent “wake up ready” services—such as micropigmentation, laser hair removal, and lash enhancements—are on the rise as more people look to streamline their daily grooming routines. Here’s why:

  • Time-saving convenience: Busy lifestyles mean people want to cut down on daily beauty routines. Long-lasting solutions allow clients to wake up ready, skipping the hassle of lengthy grooming every morning.
  • Impact of social media: Social media has increased awareness of long-lasting beauty enhancements, showing how they can save time while enhancing natural features, leading more people to seek out these treatments.
  • Long-lasting results: Semi-permanent beauty treatments for lashes, lips, skin, and brows offer results that last for weeks or months, reducing the need for daily upkeep and giving clients more time to focus on other things.
  • Natural-looking enhancement: Services like lip blushing and brow micropigmentation enhance natural features, providing a polished, “effortless” look without needing a lot of makeup.
  • Confidence boost: Having clear skin or perfectly shaped brows can significantly boost confidence. Treatments like laser skin clearing help clients feel more comfortable in their natural skin, minimizing their reliance and time spent on makeup, foundation and concealer.
  • Cost-effective in the long run: Although the initial cost to clients is an investment, semi-permanent treatments can actually save money over time by reducing the need for daily beauty products.
  • Busier lifestyles: Today’s women juggle work, gym, family, side gigs, continuing education, hobbies, and travel, leaving little time for daily grooming routines. Semi-permanent solutions help cut down on time spent in front of the mirror.

What happens after I obtain my microshading certificate?

Once you finish your microshading course in Winnipeg, the next step is to take the provincial multiple-choice Body Modification Technician exam. Lastly, ensure your workspace complies with provincial regulations. Make sure to schedule an inspection with Public Health. This ensures your space meets all necessary guidelines for offering semi-permanent makeup services.

What do I need to know about setting up my microshading business?

When setting up your micropigmentation business, your space must meet health regulations, including proper sanitation and lighting.

Tips for Setting Up Your Microshading Space

  • Make sure your space adheres to provincial guidelines.
  • Separate your work space from any living or dining areas, and do not use carpet flooring.
  • A dedicated workstation with smooth, easily cleanable surfaces is a must, along with constant hot and cold water access and a well-stocked handwashing station.
  • Good ventilation and proper lighting are key to keeping your space professional and comfortable.
  • Clean and sterilize your equipment in a separate room.

Courses to Consider After This One

Microblading

A microblading course allows you to expand your brow skills and give your clients more options. While microshading offers a soft, shaded look, microblading creates natural-looking, hair-like strokes. Learning both techniques allows you to tailor your services to suit different skin types and style preferences—helping you stand out and attract a wider client base.

Lip Blush

Lip blush is a semi-permanent service that enhances the natural colour and shape of the lips. It gives the appearance of fuller, more even-toned lips—without harsh lines.

It’s a favourite among clients looking for low-maintenance beauty solutions or to even-out or rejuvenate faded lips. Adding this service allows you to expand your menu beyond brows and gives your clients another reason to keep coming back.

Nail Technician Program

If you love the precision and artistry of micropigmentation, becoming a nail technician is an exciting path to consider. Nail services—especially enhancements and nail art—offer similar creative satisfaction and help build strong, repeat clientele. Increase your income and hireability, expand your service menu, and position yourself as a go-to beauty professional, whether you work in a salon or freelance (once licensed).

Skin Care Technician Program

Love all things skin, beauty, and skincare? For those wanting to deepen their understanding of skin and launch a full career in skin beauty, the Skin Care Technician Program pairs perfectly with any specialty beauty course. You’ll have the opportunity to learn a variety of skin care treatments such as facials, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, and body care (as well as some classic beauty staples), allowing you to expand your expertise and service offerings.
