So, you’re passionate about all things esthetics and are about to register for the program. What’s next?
Starting your 40-week journey in esthetics training is an exciting time, and the opportunities that follow are numerous. As beauty educator Kelsey McFetrige points out, “Estheticians enjoy the broadest range of opportunities among beauty school alumni.” The demand for the services that estheticians learn is steadily on the rise. Here’s what to expect:
Classroom & Hands-On
Your journey in esthetics will start with learning the basics in the classroom followed by hands-on training. A full esthetician is trained in both nail and skin care (as well as body and beauty), offering a wide range of beauty services. This comprehensive training allows you to provide various beauty care services, combining skills from both specializations.

Practical Experience
For many students, the most exciting part of the program is the portion of the hands-on experience that takes place with actual people! You will practice on real clients who book student spa services. This gives you weekly opportunities to refine your practical skills and learn to manage client experiences. This real-world practice helps you build confidence and prepare for your first job in a spa.
Building Lifelong Friendships
In esthetics school, you will meet others who share your passion for beauty. You will practice on each other and support each other as you grow in knowledge and experience. This is a formative time where you will make lifelong friends with like-minded individuals.
Wrapture Beauty Academy alumna, Andrea, shares, “An aspect of my time there that has really stuck with me is the relationships that I formed with the other students. I met a lot of really great friends here.”
Your Practical Exam
After completing your training, you will take the practical exam conducted by Apprenticeship Manitoba. Our dedicated educators will ensure you feel confident to take this step. This exam verifies your practical competencies and ensures you are ready for professional practice.
What happens after I graduate?
Once you graduate, your next step is to find employment in a spa or salon. You then register as an apprentice and complete the required work hours (3,200 hours or about 19 months of full-time employment). Considering both a 40-week diploma education and a 3,200-hour apprenticeship, the total time to become a licensed esthetician typically spans about two and a half years.
How Long is Esthetician School in Canada?
The Esthetics Diploma Program in Manitoba typically lasts 40 weeks (just over 9 months). This comprehensive program covers skin care, nail care, body and beauty, preparing you for a wide range of beauty services. The overall duration to study, graduate, apprentice, and achieve licensure as an esthetician generally amounts to about two and a half years.
The Opportunities Ahead
Upon graduation, you can pursue a career providing quality facials, various manicures and pedicures, advanced skin care treatments, waxing, and body treatments, as well as beauty and lash services. This opens the door for you to pursue employment at a wide range of beauty businesses.
As Student Advisor Jenna Lang points out, “Beauty and nail care services have become a standard part of regular routines and have a high rate of repeat business.”
This means that you can build a loyal clientele to fill your schedule.
Jenna continues, “More recently, the demand for professional skin care has significantly risen, driven by increased consumer awareness of the importance of professional skin care and the desire for beautiful, glowing skin.”
If you love skin care, you’re about to enjoy an extremely fulfilling career. However, with the wide range of skin, nail, and beauty services covered in the Esthetics Program, you will have the opportunity to work doing all the things you specifically love the most.
Is this as far as I can go?
Not at all! In fact, with exciting new treatments, devices, and products being reserched and developed for beauty services and beautiful skin, you will continuously have the opportunity to expand your scope and specialize in the areas of beauty you become most passionate about.
Estheticians aiming to advance their careers often choose to specialize in laser and advanced skin care. These professionals work in medical spas or advanced beauty settings, providing treatments such as laser, IPL, radiofrequency, and microneedling. Our Medical Skin & Laser Program prepares estheticians to excel in this field.
